Auto Theft Is Driven by Organized Crime — And It’s Hiding in Plain Sight

Most people picture car theft as random joyrides or opportunistic crime. The truth is far more alarming. Canada’s auto theft crisis is increasingly driven by organized crime and professional forgery networks, according to law enforcement and industry reports.

And here’s the reality: many vehicles NOT shipped overseas are recycled back into Canadian society under new identities. They appear in driveways, dealerships, and auctions, appearing legitimate but built on fraud.

These groups don’t just steal cars; they launder them on paper. Counterfeit VINs, falsified ownership documents, and forged registrations disguise stolen vehicles as “clean.” This isn’t petty crime, it's systematic forgery, carried out with the sophistication of a business.

  • Professional forgery suspected to have disguised more than 130 stolen vehicles

  • $1.9M in stolen cars were recovered

  • Potentially more than 150 vehicles targeted

  • Nearly 100 charges were laid against seven suspects

This is more than property crime; it’s fraud at scale. It undermines public trust, drives insurance costs, and fuels international criminal markets.

At Prevasum, we’re raising awareness about the true nature of this threat. The first step to protecting communities is understanding how sophisticated the adversary has become.
